Writing Concentration
Class Procedure
1. Discussion Warm-up
Purpose: This initial segment aims to stimulate cognitive function and engage students' interest in the subject at hand. By starting with a discussion prompt, you're encouraging students to articulate their thoughts, thereby warming up their brains for the intensive writing tasks that will follow. This process also helps to activate prior knowledge and lays the groundwork for the lesson's primary focus.
2. Grammar Practice
Purpose: The grammar segment is crucial for building a strong foundation in standard English. Covering one major grammar rule in each class ensures that students can master it in-depth. This methodical approach is designed to cover all the necessary grammar rules and mechanics that students will need throughout the academic year, enabling them to write accurately and effectively.
3. Proofreading Practice
Purpose: This step educates students on the importance of revising their work, a critical skill in the writing process. Learning to use standardized proofreading marks allows them to easily identify and correct mistakes in syntax, spelling, and punctuation. This practice promotes attention to detail and fosters a professional approach to writing.
4. Writing Strategy
Purpose: Each class focuses on a specific writing strategy to improve various aspects of writing, such as topic choice, organization, word choices, and voice. The objective is to equip students with a toolkit of effective strategies that they can apply to different types of writing. Whether they are working on narrative, persuasive, or explanatory essays, these skills will enhance their ability to convey their ideas clearly and compellingly.
5. Writing Practice
Purpose: This final segment is the culmination of all the prior stages, providing students with the opportunity to apply what they've learned in a practical setting. With a focus on academic narrative, persuasive, and explanatory writing throughout the academic year, students are exposed to different forms and subjects. Detailed comments from teachers help students understand their strengths and areas for improvement. Grading based on multiple criteria—ideas, organization, word choices, sentence fluency, voice, and conventions—ensures a comprehensive evaluation of their skills.
